The trail between Pittsburgh and DC is nearly complete - final construction in two places:
1. Great Allegheny Passage - Sandcastle Waterpark area, mile 141
Currently,
the trail snakes along the south side of the Monongahela River but dead
ends in Baldwin, where trail users encounter a fence that bars them
from entering the Keystone Metals. Most riders either turn around or ignore the signs and navigate
their bikes along railroad tracks. Construction is under way and this last stretch of the GAP is expected to be open this Spring. Click here to read the full article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
2. Chesapeake & Ohio Canal - Angler's breach, mile 12
While the park regrets this inconvenience to the public, it is necessary to assure visitor safety. Vehicular
traffic will be prohibited from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for most of the
contract duration. Every effort will be made to accommodate pedestrians
and cyclists using the area; however, all visitors are asked to obey
posted closure signs and stay on the designated detour routes for their
safety. Please obey flagmen and regulatory signs and do your part to
assure that construction proceeds as quickly and safely as possible. Click here to view a map of the detour.
